We live in San Francisco and Carmel. Because San Francisco has so many outstanding Japanese Restaurants we had never tried Robata. We missed the boat. This is an wonderful restaurant - in fact better than any Japanese Restaurant in San Francisco (other than Fuji, which closed down). It has beautiful wood interiors, Japanese lanterns and small booths. My wife had sushi, which she raved about and I had Tonkatsu, which was the best I have ever had anywhere...”

Recently ... my parents took me there for my birthday present and it is still as good as ever. I usually order the tuna sashimi (Maguro). Their fish is so good, fresh, and thickly cut you don't need to bother putting it in a roll. All you need is the small size and a bowl of rice and you are good to go. Seriously, it made me realize that all these other sushi places- which I've been thinking are great- are not THAT great.

An impressive sushi bar and expert sushi chefs are the centerpiece of this colorful Japanese restaurant adorned with paper lanterns, intimate albeit rustic dining booths, and deep rich woods. For those with an aversion to raw fish, Robata keeps the mesquite grill hot, offering salmon, chicken and red meats. Robata also prepares numerous side dishes and appetizers with a flair for the unusual. Try the Mushroom Madness, several varieties of exotic mushrooms in a mouth-watering stir fry, or grilled eggplant in miso sauce. Deep-fried soft-shell crabs and artichoke tempura are also highly recommended. It's also one of the rare Japanese restaurants with a full bar.
